Mike Stimpson Born and raised in West Midlands, England. He still lives here as well. His main job is not as a photographer, but as a Toy Video Game Designer. He has never been to school for photography. This is just a hobby he picked up because he really enjoyed it. The art he makes is mostly macro photography. His favorite thing to shoot are legos. Some of his cooler shots he sees as personal favorites are recreated works of art but instead of using people, he uses legos. In my personal opinion, this style of photography is really cool and I love the detail and simplicity of it. He is not as much trying to say something with his work as much as make the viewer smile. He is making very cool interesting work that is more fun than anything. It is fun to shoot, and look at. The photos he takes are great for all ages. He loves to use star wars characters in his art as well. He has influenced me to take macro photographs of legos and toys and make scenes with them. I really enjoyed shooting for the final project. These are some of my favorites pieces yet. I decided to use Star Wars characters in most of my shots as well, because he does that with his work, and I love Star Wars. Comparing our work, I think the shots that go together best are Sailing and Stroll, R2 and Must Fix, and

My double exposure is a picture of me in front of my shed. The pictured I laid overtop was a picture of me and my friend phil before a race. I thought this would be a good picture because racing is very important to me. The picture to me means that you can see me but what is a little harder to see is the side of me that races and loves that. Compare and ContrastThe second picture I edited was a lot better in my opinion. The first was a little random, and the lasso tool was rough. I used a lot better opacity for the second edit as well making it more visible.
ReflectionsShadowsThis golf ball had been rolling for miles and miles. The hot sun beats down upon it endlessly creating shadows. The golf ball keeps rolling aimlessly on forever and ever.
The hockey stick looks over. It sees its true self, a twig. From the humble beginnings of a tree, to this great hockey stick, it is proud. Shadows These pictures I took using the shadows created by nature and architecture. You can see the shadows created throughout the forrest by the trees. On top of that, you can also see the shadows created by the building. These two together made a great picture in my opinion. I used the edits to emphasize the shadows created and draw more attention. ReflectionsThese are some of the reflections I took that i found around my house, and here at school. The first photo of the three (my favorite) was taken here at school. I used my edit to really draw the eye to the reflection in the main window. The second photo was taken of a reelection in my kitchen. I thought the door made a really cool frame as well. The third photo was a reflection in my door of my dad standing at our bar. I like how this photo is a little unclear with a busy foreground and some slight blurriness.
Modern DetroitStars Over DowntownTommy'sBlueprintLocation 1: For my first location I chose to photograph from the Cobo roof. I edited the picture in a style that is more modern, just like the Cobo building. I like this photo because of the light, the sky, and the shadows. You can also see bits of Canada and a few buildings across the river.
Location 2: My second location was looking up to some of the buildings off of the downtown street. It was cool to see the perspective. I really liked the view looking down the street. The edit I did was something kind of cool. I like the stars. Its almsot how it would look if there was no o-zone layer. Location 3: This was a small restaurant in downtown Detroit. I loved the old look to it with the bright colors. In editing I tried to make the bright colors pop more. I like the richer color it produced. This is one of my better pictures. Location 4: This location was of the skyline. I took this photo on top of cobo roof looking across at the skyline and the buildings peeking out over the top. I liked the clouds and the light colors. My edit emphasized this a lot. One of my favorites, the edit was inspired by a minimalistic design. Location 5: This was taken looking up at the buildings from the street. This was a cool picture to me because of how much of the giant building I was able to capture. The blueprint edit over top was perfect because the photo was primarily taken up by the single building. Location 1: For my first location I went to the pond in the woods behind my house. I have been coming here since I was a kid. Me and my dad have always come out here as long as I can remember. We love to take my dog out here and play, and in the winter I LOVE to come out and play pond hockey. It is also very pretty and untouched by people for the most part so I thought it was a perfect place to take pictures.
Location 2: My second location was the paths behind my neighbors house. It is on the Knights of Columbus property. I thought the decaying old scrap metal would be a great element to add depth to my photos. I really like the shadows and the angles the scrap metal creates. The trees all around make it a great nature landscape. Location 3: For my next location I found anther spot on the Knights of Columbus property I felt was untouched. I photographed a few trees that were cut down and/or dying. The property had some trees removed years ago leaving tons of downed logs and trees. I thought pictures of the decaying trees would be a great thing to photograph. Location 4: My fourth location was looking over the valley on the property. There is a stream running right down the middle. It is a great angle looking across and being able to see the low point. It is really cool to be able to see elevation change in the pictures. I really liked this location. Location 5: The last location was the paths behind my house made by the deer over time. I thought this was a cool thing to photograph because it is a great example of nature. I used some trees in the frame to add good depth to the pictures and show distance. These are some of my favorite shots I took. |
